There are two main types of brochures: government visitors’ bureau and tour operator. Either publication is sure to intrigue you and goad you to visit, but the tour company’s brochure is the practical one…it’s the one you should learn to read and decipher. Yes, decipher, because if you know what’s being sold you’ll be well on the way to getting just what you want.

Determine if the tour is a budget, first class, deluxe or luxury tour.  What’s the difference, other than the price? The answer can be found in the text of the brochure, or ask your travel agent for the classification.

Important words and phrases:

(1)   “From:” This is the STARTING price of the tour.  It is the lowest price at which this tour is offered and is usually at the beginning or end of the season.  Check the list of prices and be aware of how they change with date…holidays almost always incur an additional charge.

(2)   “Land Only:”  The price quoted DOES NOT INCLUDE AIR FARE!

(3)   “On tour air:”  This tour covers large distance by plane and the cost of the flights may or may not be included in the tour price. Be sure to ask.

(4)   Meal codes:  B = breakfast; CB = Continental breakfast; BB = Buffet breakfast; L = Lunch; D = Dinner, HD = Highlight or special folkloric dinner

Some tours do not offer any meals, some offer breakfast only; few offer lunch. Do the included meals include beverages? Coffee, tea, wine, soft  drinks are usually not part of a meal in Europe, but some companies do include it. 

 (5)  Hotels:  Some brochures name the hotels at which you will be staying and rate them in one fashion or another (few will use a star system).  Look  for such keys as F (first class), ST, (superior tourist), T (tourist), D (deluxe).  Check the hotel on Google or Trip Advisor to get a full description. 

(6) ”Deposit:”, the amount of money necessary to secure the reservation.  Deposits are usually NOT refundable and are time sensitive in that they must be received by a specified date.

(7)  "View versus Visit:"  Visit means that there is a stop at the location for sightseeing.  Any entrance costs are included in your price.  View implies that you will stop by, perhaps for a brief picture stop, but you would not go into the location for extensive viewing.  I’ll go into more detail on this topic below.

(8)  "Why not see?"  This means that an optional excursions will be offered to tour an area or famous site.  You will have to pay additional monies in order to participate, or you can pass and use the time to go out on your own.  Unlike cruises, optionals for tours are not booked in advance unless you are doing a custom trip. On standard vacations, you would pay your tour director once you arrive at your destination.

(9) “Final payment due…” the date on which the balance of money must be paid.  Watch for special promotions that request you to pay in full at the time of booking or earlier than usual.  Although at times you can save up to 10% off the tour, you don’t want to be surprised having to come up with a substantial amount of money unless you are prepared for it.

(10) Gratuities.  It is customary to tip your guide and coach driver, the amount will depend on your assessment of the service you received.  Deluxe and Luxury   tours may include gratuities in the basic rate, be sure you understand whether tipping is included, expected or forbidden (seldom the last!)  Hotel porterage is usually included as is handling of luggage to/from the coach.  Service at meals which are included do not require tipping, but you are certainly welcome to add a bit on your own.

I told her they would be delivered by UPS to her home address on Monday.

This is 8 days prior to her departure.

She was satisfied with this and we ended the call.

She called back about 10 minutes later and asked where the documents were being mailed to. I told her they were on their way to her address in Chicago. She said, “But I’m in Rhode Island”.

I asked why she did not advise me of this and she said, “We always spend our summers in Rhode Island”

Okay, so now I need a crystal ball with all of the other hats I wear! I was supposed to know this??

I told her I would see what I could do and called the supplier to ask if another set of documents could be generated and mailed out.

This reservation was made with a Luxury Tour supplier and they agreed to send the documents directly to her Rhode Island address.

If this were a supplier other than a Luxury Tour operator, a duplicate set of documents would have a fee to generate and the overnight mail would have to be paid for by the client.

What is Angkor Wat? 

The answer is simple, the destination is not, but well-worth the effort for the curious, intrepid traveler.

Angkor Wat is the famous Hindu temple to the god Vishnu, located a few miles outside of Siem Reap, Cambodia.  Siem Reap, once the center of the Khmer empire, is now a rather quiet city which seems to exist for  tourists.

After you’ve checked into your comfortable, quiet hotel in Siem Reap you may wish to avail yourself of a soothing message…very welcome after traveling the long hours many miles you’ve come for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Your hotel will probably have an in-house masseuse, swimming pool and the luxury amenities which will be so surprisingly available in this exotic corner of the world.

The best time to visit the vast temple complex (containing many temples and monuments) is in the morning, before the heat of the day overwhelms you…always carry bottled water with you and purchase it ONLY at your hotel!  A knowledgeable guide is preferred, but a good guide book will assist you in making your way around this vast collection of architectural wonders!!!  You’ll need a guide to interpret the mural-like carvings, which tell the stories of warriors, gods, goddesses ; victories and slightly risqué encounters.

There are ladders to climb to heights with breathtaking views, cool, shady corroders whose stone walls are covered in magnificently preserved carvings. Walk with care because many areas are being restored  There will be touring monks in saffron robes…don’t be surprised if they take your picture and feel free to ask you to pose with you for your camera.  Many are mendicants and will politely accept charity, but will not confront or pester or pester you.

The breathtaking site of  Ta Prohm will dazzle you!! This is the oft-photographed temple that has been left as it was found when this area was re-discovered.  The jungle has invaded and vast trunks and branches inundate the buildings.  You will be amazed how nature can reclaim vast areas of man’s endeavor!!

Before you say farewell to Angkor Wat, you must await sunset at Angkor Wat:  the golden hues of the magnificent towers glisten in the setting rays and the shadows elongate…the lake provides a mirror reflection of this amazing sight, and you will take a picture (in your camera or in your mind’s eye) that will be a momento of a fantastic adventure.

Here are some other  tips to reduce stress during travel.

• Get away long enough time to let go of your daily grind.  A week is recommended.
• Watch your time zones – too many time zones actually increase your stress on your body’s natural rhythms.
• Don’t over schedule your trip – Make sure you have quiet time each day.
• Be social – making new acquaintances has a restorative power.
• Enjoy physical activity – moderate exercise like swimming and walking are great energy boosters.

Also known as the City of Lights, one of Paris’ highlights, is certainly the Eiffel Tower. Engineered by Gusatave Eiffel, the Eiffel Tower was built in 1887 as the entrance arch to the Exposition Universelle, the World’s Fair. The tower has three stories, with the first two accessible by stairs and elevator, while the top floor is accessible solely by elevator. The view is not all the Eiffel Tower offers though, there is a skating rink on the first floor during winters and the facility is free to use. Apart from the rink, there is the Altitude 95 on the first floor, a restaurant able to cater to up to 200 people. The second floor has a reservations only restaurant, with a private elevator. In addition, a post office, a photo studio, souvenir shops and beautiful gardens. The view from the top, as expected, is phenomenal. You cannot miss the Eiffel Tower at night. The “metal lady” is illuminated by 352 projectors of 1000 watts and twinkles every 30 minutes in the evening with 20.000 bulbs and 800 fairy lights.

With the popularity of the monument, you can expect to face long lines, but the end view from the top of the tower is a worthwhile experience. If you travel with a tour operator, you can typically skip the lines as they get preferred access. Packages include hotel accommodations, breakfast daily and a half day city tour with prices starting at $599 pp for 5 nights. If you don’t like the idea of being on a motorcoach the entire time, there are not “city stays” that allow flexibility, while still having the essentials taken care of. You can also combine stays with surrounding cities such as London or Nice, take a cooking class, visit a wine vineyard, stay in a luxury resort, or take a river cruise.

In August, one of the world's greatest spectacles can be witnessed, the wildebeest and zebra migrations on the Masai Mara national reserve in Kenya. While on an African safari, you can also see lions, giraffes, rhinos, cheetahs, antelopes and gazelles. There are some very unique places to stay in Kenya, including lodges, safari clubs and luxury tented camps.  

If you don't mind crowds, you can visit Scotland in August to attend the world's largest art festival, in Edinburgh, or the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. It is the rainy season, so make sure and pack an umbrella or raincoat. Accommodations are hard to come by due to these festivals, so it may be best to book with a tour operator who already had rooms blocked off a year in advance, so you are not overpaying. 

Yellowstone national park is located in Wyoming.  August is a great time to see wildlife, including bears, wolves, eagles, elk and bison. The weather is warm during the day, but can get chilly at higher elevations in the evenings. You can hike, take guided fishing and boating trips, photo safaris and more. You can spend several days in Yellowstone, or combine it with travel to other U.S. national parks. Chances are that most national park tours are sold out for this August, but you can now book early for 2012 national park tours and save up to 10%. 

In August, the salmon spawn in Alaska, which attracts bears to feed along the shorelines. Bald eagles also feed on the salmon, so this is a great time for bird watching and to see Alaskan wildlife. Species of birds include ducks, hawks, puffin and loons. If cruising in Alaska, you may also see whales and sea otters. Holland America's ms Nieuw Amsterdam is the perfect ship for this culinary adventure.
