Kenya and Tanzania: A Classic Safari

Day 2: Birds of Lake Manyara National Park
Set out for a four-night safari* to Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti plains, traveling through Lake Manyara National Park. Along with abundant giraffes, baboons and elephants, Lake Manyara is home to a multitude of birds, including great birds of prey. Continue on to Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, home to some 30,000 large mammals. Please join us for a welcome reception and dinner at your lodge; built directly into the rim of vast Ngorongoro Crater, it overlooks the caldera’s lush, wildlife-rich floor far below.

Day 3: A Garden of Eden in Ngorongoro Crater
Experience the Africa of bygone days when you explore the “lost world” of Ngorongoro Crater, believed by many to have been Africa’s original “Garden of Eden.” Within this dormant volcano’s walls lie short grasslands, swamps, forests and a freshwater lake, inspiring the continual migration of animals. From aboard your four-wheel-drive vehicle, you’ll have an opportunity to spot Africa’s renowned Big Five – buffalo, elephant, leopard, the black-maned lion and the endangered, rare black rhinoceros – as well as herds of zebras, wildebeests and gazelles. A private picnic lunch in the crater will be a highlight of your day.

Day 4: Ancient Man in Olduvai Gorge
Your day begins with a visit to Olduvai Gorge; it was here that archaeologists Louis and Mary Leakey discovered the fossilized remains of some of the earliest known human species. Enjoy game viewing as you drive to your wilderness lodge in Serengeti National Park; be prepared for bumps and bounces along the unpaved roads. No matter how rough the ride, wait until you see your safari lodge in the Serengeti – it’s built for unprecedented pampering.

Day 5: Endless Plains in Serengeti National Park
Morning and afternoon game drives take you into the golden Serengeti savanna today. The Serengeti ecosystem is one of the oldest on Earth, where diverse habitats sustain an abundance of flora and fauna. You may spot numerous prides of lions, zebras, hyenas, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, black rhinoceros, hippos, buffalo, jackals, gazelles and primates. Enjoy the evening under the backdrop of an African sunset and savor a taste of Pan-African cuisine during a leisurely dinner.

Day 6: Kenya's Amboseli National Park
Fly to Arusha this morning for a chance to explore the sights near  Kilimanjaro National Park. Dominating the skyline is majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, peaking over surrounding landscapes from more than 15,000 feet up. We’re headed for Kenya this afternoon for a two-night stay in Amboseli National Park. Its savanna grasslands spread across the Kenya / Tanzania border attracting herds of free-ranging elephants and other wildlife. A visit this afternoon to a local Maasai village near your safari lodge introduces the people who make their homes here.

Day 7: Private Game Drives in Amboseli
Wake up in the heart of Amboseli, offering abundant opportunities to see the wildlife that thrive in the park. Elephants, hippos and buffaloes frequent nearby emerald-green swamps and grazing antelopes can be spotted in the flat grasslands, along with jackals, warthogs, baboons and monkeys.

Day 8: Mt. Kenya's Animal Orphanage
A morning flight brings you to the legendary Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club. Straddling the Equator, the Club was founded in 1959 by late film star William Holden and is renowned as a mecca for celebrities. Become acclimated with the area during an Equatorial demonstration, followed by a private visit to the nearby animal orphanage and education center.

Day 9: Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary
We have an exciting day planned for you as we take an excursion to the private Ol Pejeta Conservancy, dedicated to preserving natural habitats for the conservation of endangered species. In addition to the rescued chimpanzees that have found sanctuary here, this protected reserve boasts the largest resident black rhino population in East Africa. Look for them and other elite members of the Big Five during today’s game drives.

Day 10: Private Tour to see the Village Weavers
See local villagers shear, spin, dye and weave sheep’s wool by hand to create colorful rugs, sweaters and shawls on a private visit to Nanyuki, then return to your resort for an afternoon at leisure. Complimentary activities include tennis, lawn bowling, croquet and swimming; other activities, from golf and fishing to horseback riding, are available at an add’l cost.

Day 11: Masai Mara Reserve

Day 12: Balloon Ride over the Masai Mara

Day 13: Fly to Nairobi and Journey Home
